I wish I had gone to school at Academy Hill. Fortunately, I have the second best thing: the privilege of working here. My own education was dotted with inspirational teachers and experiences. Here, those teachers and those experiences are the only kind we have.
I am proud to tell my friends stories about Academy Hill. I talk about the latest Good Morning Program presentation—a seven year old, dressed as Jane Goodall, explaining the social behavior of chimpanzees (acted out by a group of her classmates). I talk about how the Middle School field trip to a wind farm was followed by a classroom challenge to design a working miniature wind turbine. I talk about a student essay about the local ice cream scoop-man, published in the major regional newspaper, that was greeted with impressed letters to the editor. And I talk about the staff member who took a prestigious summer fellowship for teachers despite the fact that it would keep her incredibly busy until mere days before her own wedding.
At Academy Hill learning is not busy work, nor is community a buzz word. Minds matter. Individuality matters. Shared enthusiasm is the norm. Academy Hill is a school that works the way schools ought to.
Academy Hill makes me proud to come to work every morning. It makes our children, parents, and teachers proud to come, too. Come see why.
